A REPORT FROM A CAMPER FROM NOTTS D.A.

Hi Steve,

Firstly a huge thanks to all at Leicester DA for the warm welcome shown to Jo and I this last weekend, and for the great program of entertainment you provided. We will certainly be joining you again at some point.

I note from your website you invite member to submit camping reports. Here’s my take on events from this weekend...

1st – 3rd July Whestone Gorse

This was our first outing with the Leicester DA; in fact this was only our sixth outing in our caravan, a 1997 Elddis fondly known as Vonny, to date.

So far our camping trips have been pleasurable, bordering on disastrous; I wouldn’t describe myself as inept at all of this; my wife Jo most certainly would, even my two year old is quite likely to agree, but I view it all as a learning curve.

We arrived at the site at Whestone Gorse later than hoped, a result of getting lost (something I do a lot) and slower traffic in front holding us up. Still very new to towing I desperately try to avoid all overtaking maneuvers, but sensing that the guy on the bicycle I’d been closely following for the last 25 minutes was beginning to freak out, I finally plucked up enough courage to pass.

We eventually pulled on site at around 7pm, only after my Sat Nav despairingly let out a huge sigh and instructed me to pull over and ask for directions.

We were greeted by friendly stewards and began pitching up in the far corner of the flat field, where we hoped our camping incompetence would go relatively undetected. However the numerous offers of assistance, including one from the six year old boy from the caravan opposite us, suggested it did not.

Saturday afternoon we were invited to partake in the horseshoe throwing tournament and subsequently made it through to the final. As visitors, we selflessly and gallantly threw the final game to allow our hosts some glory, in gratitude and return for their warm welcome J

That night we traipsed off to the nearby barn for an evening of Country and Western entertainment, complete with live music. There was also an ‘American Supper’ in which dishes of food were contributed for all to share. There was an impressive array of pork pies, pasties, roast beef sandwiches and other hearty dishes to satisfy the undiluted appetite of seasoned campers and seasonal cowboys. Completely new to this concept, I contributed a delicately seasoned chicken and lemon paella; on reflection I may have just misjudged my target audience...

A fantastic, well organised evening which we thoroughly enjoyed - perhaps a little too much in fact; the following day we arose too late for coffee morning, with sore heads and just a very vague recollection of witnessing the funeral possession of Elvis Presley passing by at the end of the night; surely that could not have happened....

Despite becoming the first, and no doubt, the last person to electrocute themselves on a charcoal barbecue (an incident involving me, a large dose of stupidity and an electric cattle fence), the weekend, in comparison to our previous trips at least, was relatively incident free. All in all a great weekend for which we wish to sincerely thank all at the Leicester DA for.

Our next planned outing is a summer holiday in Wells-Next-to-the-Sea, Norfolk. We note that Leicester DA has a THS nearby that week; so be warned, you might not have seen the last of us...

All the best, and thanks again for your hospitality.

Steve, Jo and Archie (Notts DA)

Hi Steve, Joe & Archie

Thankyou for the above report, I think you were beaten by the better pair in the Horseshoe's. (Ha ha) It's a shame you missed the coffee morning and the presentaition of the prize for the winners. I'm very glad you enjoyed your first visit with Leicestershire DA and I hope to see you again in the future.

Regards

Steve Atkins (Chairman of Leicestershire D.A)

Two Reports from Upton Barn October 2010

Having looked for meet for this weekend local to us, and our friends picked out the same meet we phoned Lisa to see if the weather hadnt cancelled the meet.We decided to go despite the poor weather we had in Nottingham.Upon arrival Julie sent us to our pitches and let us set up before booking us in the the rain which we found very good. This site is a very good site in our opinion leccy showers toilet what more did we need as well as bar and swimming pool which we made use of kids loved it.Bit of a let down from the site owners double booking the barn out, but Wayne and Lisa sorted that problem out so the evening still went ahead even though they got me to do the music for them lol, and that was no problem at all both our 2 units that turned up enjoyed the whole weekend and will be joining leics da again soon hopefully

Hi

After stumbling upon the meet at Upton barn, we contacted the stewards to enquire about arriving early, [as we all work night shifts in our little group] to which we were immediately accommodated, then after the site owner had made a booking error of the barn for Saturday night social, the stewards rallied round [pardon the punn] and made the very most of what was available to them, to conclude putting aside the horrendous weather for setting up and packing away, a most enjoyable weekend was had by all, and we certainly hold up our hats to Lisa and Wayne for all their hard work and effort ploughed in to the meet. KEEP UP THE GOOD MEETS.

What a weekend! Jean and I came Wednesday, but everybody else arrived Friday, Colin and Deb's were our 'meet' stewards, friendly, help full and a good laugh, (any more cake Deb's) a good turn out, thourghly enjoyed the impromptu get together Friday night and the quiz and bingo Saturday. Hi Steve
Just a quick note to say thank you for two great weekends with Leicestershire DA, the first was at Rutland Water back in May, the weekend was full of entertainment and the Ivy League and talent show was brilliant. Our second weekend was at Rempstone Steam Rally and the steam fair was great. The brillant weather and company at the rally made the weekend.
See you soon at some more LDA rallies.

Hi Steve and all committee members.
Just to say a big thank you for the AGM weekend, what a terrific job you all did. You entertained us well, you fed us well and most of all you gave us a big welcome, as well as hosting the AGM. All this on top of running your Birthday Meet at Lindon Tops, a few weeks before. We think you all deserve a big pat on the back and a well-deserved rest.

THANKYOU LETTER FROM

THE CAMPING & CARAVANNING CLUB CHAIRMAN

Hi Steve

Regional AGM

A well deserved congratulations to Leicester for the way the whole weekend was organised and conducted

The enthusiasm coming through from your committee and members is something the whole club can be proud of; indeed some units would do well to emulate.

Your team were on top of things the whole weekend and the meal, service and trouble taken over Saturday evening was first class.

Please pass on the thanks of Janet and myself to them all.

Website.

I am by no means knowledgeable on the quality of websites.

However, having looked for the first time this afternoon I feel that what you have is first class.

It is certainly one which members will wish to keep up to speed with and the presentation is most attractive and a challenge for others to follow.

Most attracting and the interaction and style will ensure its regular use.

Well done to you all.

Keep up the good work  (do not work yourselves into the ground)

Best wishes

Keith and Janet Jackson

To Steve & The Committee
John & myself thought you staged a very good meet, we have attended your anniversary meet a few times and we always enjoy it, though we thought this meet was the best of them all. All the committee we spoke too were very friendly and very helpful, you all worked very hard, in fact we don't think we saw Steve the (Chairman & Entertainments officer) ever sit down for one minute he was always doing something. The woman in the LDA show who did the hole in the bucket was brill (I can't remember her name, I think Steve calls her the 1st Lady) She brought tears to my eyes with laughter. The whole program was great and we really enjoyed every minute of it and of course we will be there next year. Keep it up.
Many Thanks
